HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE - ORAL

(HYE-droe-KLOR-oh-THYE-a-zide)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Microzide

Hydrochlorothiazide USES: This medication is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Hydrochlorothiazide is a "water pill" (diuretic) that causes you to make more urine. This helps your body get rid of extra salt and water.

Hydrochlorothiazide also reduces extra fluid in the body (edema) caused by conditions such as heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease. This can lessen symptoms such as shortness of breath or swelling in your ankles or feet.

HOW TO USE Hydrochlorothiazide: Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once daily in the morning with or without food. It is best to avoid taking this medication within 4 hours of your bedtime to prevent having to get up to urinate.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

For optimal results, it's vital to take this medication consistently. To aid in memory, administer it at a uniform time daily. Even if your condition seems to improve, it's crucial to persist with this medication. Keep in mind that the majority of individuals with high blood pressure don't exhibit illness symptoms.

Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens (for example, your blood pressure readings increase).

Hydrochlorothiazide SIDE EFFECTS: Upset stomach, dizziness, or headache may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

This medicine could lead to a significant reduction in body fluids (dehydration) and salt/minerals. If you experience infrequent yet serious side effects such as muscle cramps or weakness, abnormal heart rhythms, decreased frequency of urination, excessive thirst or dry mouth, diminished vision, or eye pain, promptly inform your doctor.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

In the US -

Hydrochlorothiazide PRECAUTIONS: Prior to using hydrochlorothiazide, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, especially if you're allergic to the medication itself or have other known allergies. This medication could include inactive components, like sulfites present in certain brands, which may trigger allergic responses or other complications.
